We didn't spend as much time as normal with Dad today, Mom and I were down doing some work at their house and picking up some stuff Mom needed. Dad told us that Uncle Franklin, Aunt Donna and Aunt Nancy were in to see him, he really enjoys visiting, they brought him some cookies. I was told I wouldn't like them, so I better give him another one, that way I won't have to eat them. I am so glad he has his sense of humor, it seems to help him deal with his situation better.
We saw Dad before we left while he was getting his eyes checked, a slight change in his bifocal 'script, although they are still good, he is starting to develop cataracts (not bad enough for surgery... yet) The doctor did prescribe some allergy drops to see if that helps with the itching and burning though. This evening he told us they felt much better after the nurse put the drops in.
Tomorrow, Mom and I will meet with Kimawa and Toni to get trained in some PT "homework" for us to work with Dad on when we are there in the evening. Dad has asked for more therapy time, and right now this is the only way to get it. We do work on him with his speech homework and quite often when Dad is up to it we will call someone so Dad can talk to them on the phone.
Dad keeps getting better and better at feeding himself, Uncle Bob and Aunt Dee were there yesterday at lunchtime and were quite impressed at the improvements he has made since they saw him last. He has a bit of an issue with soups and jello (who doesn't?) other than that he can do very well on his own and generally insist on doing it too.
We are trying to get him to spend more time out of his bed with the other residents, he doesn't like to sit in his chair very long, there are a few residents that are helping us in the battle. I have been trying to think of an activity that he would enjoy so maybe we could use it to get him to stay up longer.
Mom is still holding up surprisingly well, She is making some very difficult decisions for the both of them. She can (and does) discuss them with Dad, but still, she has to make the final decision in the end. I know I have said this before, but, I have a whole new level of respect for both of them and the love they truly have for each other.
Please keep the prayers and positive thoughts flowing their way, they need the support and encouragement as much now as ever.
Love to All;
Skip
PS: Mom, Kathy and I have become quite close to one the other residents, who is going through a terribly rough time right now, physically and emotionally. Could you please add Marylou to your prayers and thoughts too.... she really needs the lift that it will give her.
Thanks, Skip
